Towards the end of the following video is a little demo of the starwalk app for ipad which I thought would be really relative and interesting to adapt for my project. The itunes page is

Now if I was able to implement that into say my own app for something like a virtual tour of lets say what London used to look like and with help by using the inbuilt compass you get I would be able to overlay onto existing scenery. So for me the idea of this being a few years off seems almost present day...
